Racing is ending in Aotearoa

2,000 greyhounds will soon need a place to call home

With greyhound racing coming to an end, greyhounds are heading en masse from the racecourse to retirement. Luckily they are great for the places most of us live: apartments, small spaces, urban places. Big on sleep and small on exercise, these gentle and well-mannered hounds are ready to fit in with your whānau.

Have questions? We have answers.

The six things people ask us most, photographed with six New Zealand fashion houses.

Do greyhounds need tons of exercise?

No. They are fast, but they are usually just fast asleep. A couple of short walks and plenty of chill time is all they need to be happy.

Are greyhounds good with cats and small pets?

Some are, some are not. We do an initial assessment, and from there it is about knowing your dog and using common sense. We will help guide you through it.

Do I need a big backyard?

No. Greyhounds are low key and perfectly happy in small outdoor spaces, or even in an apartment.

Are greyhounds good with kids?

Yes. They are gentle, friendly and usually adore being part of the family. A little supervision and good manners all round go a long way.

Are greyhounds good inside the house?

Definitely. They love being indoors, though they may need a little time to learn the basics like stairs, shiny floors and general what's-what.

What is the deal with greyhounds and coats?

Greyhounds have thin skin and low body fat, so if you are cold, they are cold. They look great in warm coats and often wear special martingale collars. They end up with the best wardrobe of any breed.

About GAP

When you adopt a greyhound you receive much more than just a dog.

Greyhounds as Pets is a registered charity rehoming greyhounds that are no longer suitable for racing. Affectionate, gentle and intelligent, greyhounds make great pets for most households, including those in smaller homes.

Our team is committed to matching you with the hound that suits your family's circumstances — whether that is the person you meet for the first time at an event, or the rehoming team lead handing over your new dog.

Our greyhounds are carefully assessed and matched to their new owners. We act a bit like a dating agency. Every dog also visits a vet for a health check, desexing and microchipping, and we make sure vaccinations and council registrations are up to date.

Adoptions completed

3,000+

Three thousand completed adoptions are a testament to how well our matching process works — and every one of them started with a form much like the one on this site.
